 | Tagged Image File Format (.tif):
TIF files are uncompressed, so they don't lose data
information and color information. The file size
is larger. This file format is best for use in newspapers,
such as the Lancer Ledger, flyers, brochures and any other desktop publishing
assignment. |
 | Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpeg, .jpg):
JPEG files are used to save photographs (millions of colors) and
are used for web pages (also a good choice for powerpoint). The file size is smaller than that of a tif file.
|
 | Graphical Interchange Format (.gif):
This is also used on the web in the form of clip art and line drawings.
It is not recommend to save photos in gif format. Gifs are also the file
format used in many animations and for transparent backgrounds. |
 | Vector Graphics (Adobe
Illustrator, CAD programs, Macromedia Freehand):
Drawing programs allow you to create vector graphics. The images are
made up of mathematical formulas that connect vectors or simple geometric
shapes such as lines and arcs. Vector graphics are smoother than
bitmapped images. Vector images can be resized without losing the
quality of the image. In Publications we convert clipart into a vector
graphic in Adobe Illustrator.

A note about Vector graphics (sometimes
called vector shapes or vector
objects) are made up of lines and curves defined by mathematical
objects called vectors, which describe an image
according to its geometric characteristics.
Example of a vector image at different levels of magnification
You can freely move or modify vector graphics without losing detail
or clarity, because they are resolution-independent—they maintain crisp
edges when resized, printed to a PostScript printer, saved in a PDF
file, or imported into a vector-based graphics application. As a result,
vector graphics are the best choice for artwork, such as logos, that
will be used at various sizes and in various output media.
The vector objects you create using the drawing and shape tools in
Adobe Creative Suite are examples of vector graphics. You can use the
Copy and Paste commands to duplicate vector graphics between Creative
Suite components.

 | Portable Document Format (.pdf):
This is the
format used for many documents that are displayed on the web. Think of
it as a picture of a document. This is ideal so that you don't lose any
of the formatting. If you have the Adobe Acrobat program, you can make
changes in a PDF file. Otherwise, the free Adobe Acrobat Reader program
is available free on the net. |
 | Png
Portable network graphic. (Note: Very versatale for use in PowerPoint,
InDesign, web design, etc.)

NOTE: With Adobe Acrobat you can create forms that
can be filled in on the Internet. The areas that are filled in are
actually fields that were created. |
